IBM Power9 Disk Drives and SSD for IBM i and AIX Servers

Power9 9009-41A S9149009-42A S924 and 9009-22L L922 IBM i, Linux Servers and AIX Servers support SFF-3 drives in the CEC as well as SFF-2 drives in EXP12SX or EXP24SX expansion drawers. IBM i customers with write intensive Power9 disk drive (HDD) workloads should upgrade base storage backplanes to higher performing EJ1M or EJ1D storage backplanes that utilize write cache. The IBM Power9 Supports 10k and 15k disk drives with and without cache, as well as IBM Enterprise SSD with eMLC4 technology for write intensive workloads and Mainstream SSD for read intensive applications performing no more than 1 write per day. Although IBM Solid State Drives will slightly increase monthly maintenance costs, for applications that require the performance, and will have a lower total cost due to the overall smaller foot print required. Read our IBM i and Power9 Server blogs about peformance optimizations to learn more about the importance of the using the right HDD or SSD type.
